The question is whether the business has a clear owner for its technology decisions.
An effective managed service provider can keep day-to-day IT running. Your users receive support, infrastructure is maintained, and routine technical work has an owner. As the company grows, a separate set of decisions needs attention: which systems to invest in, what to prioritize, and how technology should support the next business milestone.
Separate service delivery from executive decisions.
An MSP works within an agreed service scope. A CIO connects technology priorities with business goals, resources, and risk. Those responsibilities need to work together, with a clear understanding of who recommends a course of action, who approves it, and who follows through.
When ownership is unclear, decisions often fall to the executive with the most immediate need or the provider responsible for one part of the environment. Each may have a valid perspective. Someone still needs to assess the implications across the business.
Look for the leadership gap.
Competing requests: Departments want different systems, but there is no agreed way to prioritize investment.
Fragmented oversight: Providers deliver their individual services, while dependencies and escalations cross organizational boundaries.
An approaching milestone: A new facility, operating change, or transaction requires a coordinated technology plan.
Define the mandate before choosing the model.
Start by identifying the decisions that need executive ownership and the leadership capacity already available. Agree on responsibilities, authority, and communication with the business and its providers.
Fractional CIO leadership can fit when you need experienced direction on a recurring basis and the required scope does not justify a full-time position. The engagement should make ownership and follow-through explicit.
